There are five high five principals that October Sky does a great job of representing. Below are the examples of each principal in the movie Change is constant: The movie October Sky shows the high five principal change is constant very well. In the very beginning of the movie we see that the first ever satellite to go into space has been launched. We can clearly see that many people are sceptical about this launch as it is a huge change for society. This satellite shows that the world is ever changing and technology is becoming more and more advanced. Another example of this is when Homer had to quit high school and become a miner because his dad was injured in the mines. Homer had to make some major changes in his life because of his dad. This shows that again change is constant, whether it is a good change or a bad change.
Learning is ongoing: In the movie October Sky Homer and Leon Bolden are excellent examples of how learning is ongoing. Homer never gave up on building rockets, even when everyone was telling him to. He just kept learning and learning about how to make his rockets better. This teaches the audience that there is always more to learn, even if you think you know everything about a subject there is probably still more to be learned. Another example of how learning is ongoing is how Leon was learning from the kids and the kids were learning from him. The character Leon in October Sky is welder who helps the group of boys build their rocket. He learns a lot of new things about rockets from these boys showing that he may know a lot about welding but there is always more to learn. In return Leon taught the kids how to weld. This is yet another example of how learning is ongoing.
Focus on the Journey: October sky was a great example of the high five principal focus on the journey because of Homer’s journey. Homer had to focus on each step of his building process in order to achieve his working rocket. Homer could not try and make the perfect rocket the first time he had to focus on each step and failure in order to get what he wanted. Another example is when Homer got arrested for starting a forest fire. Homer’s rocket supposedly set a portion of the forest on fire so he was arrested. Homer then had to focus on the journey and not give up on his dream of building rockets just becasue of a set back. This shows us that even if there are setbacks in life you just have to keep perservering and focusing on the journey to get where you want to go.
Follow your heart: Throughout the movie October Sky we are shown many examples of this high five principal by Homer. Homer is told numerous times that he would never do it and that his dreams were stupid, but Homer just kept persevering. Homer was even told by his friends to give up and that going to all that work was not worth it but he knew that he had to follow his heart. This shows the reader that even if it seems like everything is against you if you follow your heart good things will happen. Another example of this is when Homer’s father was strictly against him building rockets. He wanted his son to work in the mines just like him. He was against him from the very beginning until almost the very end. Despite his father’s wishes Homer decided to follow his heart and do something great, with or without the support of his father.
Access your allies: I think that october sky does an excellent job at showing the final principal access your allies through Homer Hickman. Homer went to his friends for help, building and creating the rocket. He accessed his friends for help and information to complete his project. Another example is when he asked for help from many businessmen around the community. He needed to have a part of his rocket melded so he asked for a favor from the welder. He also needed some parts for the rocket that were very expensive so he asked a local businessman for spare parts. Homer did an excellent job of accessing his allies for help when he needed it.
